Magical Th inking

چکیده
Every day we are confronted with a variety of events for which we clearly know the cause. We’re hungry because we were in a hurry and missed breakfast. Sue realizes that John is mad at her because she forgot to meet him after work. But for other events the causes are less evident. Why does the house creak at night? Is it because of changes in the weather conditions, strong winds, or some other cause? Could it be a ghost? Why did the streetlight go off just as we walked by? Was it because of a burned out bulb, faulty wiring, or is it caused in some way by our physical presence? How do we explain the myriad of events that we witness on a daily basis, especially those for which no discernable cause is observed? Th is search for causality in everyday life, for both mundane and mysterious events, seems to be a universal cognitive process. How particular individuals reason about diff erent events and make reference to diff erent types of explanation seems to depend on Abstract

Fluid inking: augmenting the medium of free-form inking with gestures
We present Fluid Inking, a generally applicable approach to augmenting the fluid medium of free-form inking with gestural commands. Our approach is characterized by four design criteria, including: 1) pen-based hardware impartiality: all interactions can be performed with a button-free stylus, the minimal input hardware requirement for inking, and the least common denominator device for pen-bas...
متن کاملIncorporating Digital Inking Methods in Hci Knowledge Elicitation
This workshop paper presents digital inking software tools designed to aid and enhance the capabilities of HCI practitioners. The advantages of using these inking tools as part of a HCI practitioners’ toolkit are firstly to aid in user design and testing with non-technical participants, based on the aesthetic simulacra of digital inking methods as they closely mimic pen-based approaches. Second...

Th is form of refl ective thinking encompasses the research fi eld usually labeled as “metacognition.” A ...
متن کاملEscape by inking and secreting: marine molluscs avoid predators through a rich array of chemicals and mechanisms.
Inking by marine molluscs such as sea hares, cuttlefish, squid, and octopuses is a striking behavior that is ideal for neuroecological explorations. While inking is generally thought to be used in active defense against predators, experimental evidence for this view is either scant or lacks mechanistic explanations. Does ink act through the visual or chemical modality? If inking is a chemical d...
متن کاملJuho Ritola Deliberative Democracy, the Deliberating Agent, and Critical Th inking: An ideal picture and some empirical challenges1
According to some prominent theorists, the conditions of deliberative democracy call for reasoned decisions from mutually justifi able premises. Th e deliberative ideal places demands on the epistemic quality of the deliberating process and on the epistemic habits and beliefs of the relevant agents. In this essay, I discuss this ideal in light of empirical literature. I examine some empirical l...
